A large diamond dug up in South Africa led to an eye-opening discovery for scientists. A mineral not found on the Earth’s surface–calcium silicate perovskite–was trapped inside the diamond. The mineral is found in the lower parts of the planet’s mantle–meaning the diamond was likely formed hundreds of miles below the surface, showing researchers the Earth recycles parts of its crust.
