WHAT HAPPENED: A car plowed into packed sidewalks in Times Square around noon on Thursday leaving one dead and nearly two dozen injured. The crash initially prompted terrorism fears but officials say there’s no indication it was an act of terror. The driver, 26-year-old Richard Rojas, was allegedly high on drugs and taken into custody. He’s a Navy veteran with a history of drunken driving arrests and NBC says he’d been hearing voices before the crash. NBC

THE VICTIM: Alyssa Elsman, an 18-year-old from Michigan, was the lone person killed in the crash. She was visiting New York with her mother and 13-year-old sister. Elsman worked as a waitress at Sonic and was studying at a community college in Michigan. DAILY NEWS
